IBM Global Business Service (GBS) Public Service and IBM Office of the Federal Chief Technology Officer (FCTO) have developed an understanding of the complexities and challenges associated with NOAA's massive data stores. Our NOAA Data Catalog highlights a subset of data which we have begun to investigate in an exploratory fashion. The Catalog will be updated as we continue to better understand additional datasets. For now, users may choose to browse the Catalog in search of a particular type of data, or to get a better understanding of the data NOAA collects.

IBM has also developed two presentation assets, or demos, that illustrate ways that NOAA data can be used to address unique problems.
Both demos utilize the same Rapid Refresh (RAP) dataset available through the Portal and rely on a common architectural backbone. These demos also showcase how easily IBM's Bluemix Platform can be used create web or mobile based aps that incorporate RAP data.
The diagram below depicts the architecture shared by the two demos. IBM Bluemix Infrastructure was used to extract and manipulate the NOAA data and IBM Bluemix Platform provided the rule engine which then caused alerts to appear on the dashboard or mobile device. The combination of IBM Bluemix Infrastructure and IBM Bluemix Platform allows users to create completely customized applications.
This architecture was used to create two demos. The Train Wreck Demo uses weather data to assist First Responders. The Strawberry Fields Demo uses weather data to assist strawberry farmers.
